Susan Lloyd Lattimore, Ed.M., M.S.
Ms. Lattimore has worked with Baltimore City Public School children since 1975 as a reading specialist and early literacy teacher leader. She developed programs that address early indicators of reading difficulties.
Charlene Iannone-Campbell, M.A., C.A.S.E., NBCT
Ms. Iannone-Campbell is Director of Early Learning for Baltimore City Public Schools and is passionate about providing excellent preschool resources to Baltimore’s youngest learners.
Rhyme Awareness
Overview
DROPP 1 has three complete Activity Sets, aimed at practicing and reviewing the skill of rhyme awareness over 30 days with structured lessons.
Lesson Structure:
- Task 1: Transition (2-3 minutes)
- Task 2: Concept/Skill (12-15 minutes)
- Task 3: Transition Out (2-3 minutes) for lessons 1-3, with Lesson 4 focusing more on review.
Goals and Emphasis of the Lessons
- Saturate students with rhyming songs, fingerplays, and books.
- Use a multisensory approach to reinforce rhyme awareness.
Student Objectives
- Listen to sounds of rhyming words.
- Develop an awareness of rhyme through songs and books.
Teacher Objectives
- Emphasize the sounds of rhyming words clearly.

Lesson 1: Sound Chips
Objectives

- Listen carefully to everyday sounds.
- Identify sounds in rhymes.
Teacher Objectives
- Guide students in identifying sounds.
- Observe student engagement.
Rhymes, Songs, and Fingerplays
- "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider" - engage the students with movements and discussions to emphasize rhymes.
Transition Activity
Begin with engaging fingerplay and review rhyming concepts related to everyday sounds and previously learned songs.
Lesson 2: Mary Had a Little Lamb
Objectives
- Review sounds and recognize rhyming words through singing and reading.
Lesson 3: Hop on Pop
Transition Activity
Engage students with songs that reinforce recognizing rhyming words while moving. Focus on the interactive experience of reading with the book and making predictions on the rhymes throughout the reading.
Lesson 4: Rhyme Awareness Review
Objectives
- Reinforce awareness of rhyming words with familiar songs and stories.
Encourage participation and interaction with a focus on having fun while learning about rhymes.
