Teach Explicitly During Story Time
Stop and teach vocabulary words by:
- Giving a child-friendly definition
- Using examples from the story
- Making connections with children’s life experiences
Expand & Enhance Instruction
Increase the amount and intensity of literacy instruction by:
- Using large groups, small groups, and one-on-one instruction
- Providing more examples and feedback during instruction time
- Adding additional sessions during the day or week
Focus on Key Skills
Identify key skills for language and early literacy success by:
- Teaching vocabulary words that are useful in the classroom and at home
- Targeting a small set of sounds (e.g., /m/, /s/, /p/, /b/) for phonemic awareness
