## Course: Literacy for English Learners

**Student Selection**: Undergraduate or graduate students preparing to teach elementary grade levels

**Description**: This course addresses the science of reading instruction for English learners. The course begins with a historical perspective of instruction in U.S. classrooms for language-minority children. Students learn the public policy that supports the science of reading in schools today. The course continues with a description of the language and literacy development of first and second language learners. The language basis for reading is explored, as the course considers the role of language for the development of reading and writing in the native language and English. Subsequent lectures explore the subskills of successful reading and writing development.
